Saliva fertility test(11 posts) (6 voices)
Upon my nutritionist's recommendation I purchased a mini microsope that measures the most fertile days according to the appearance of fern like shapes viewed within a drop of saliva. In my most recent two cycles (since I started using the scope) I viewed one day of ferns. The instruction booklet says to expect a few days worth. I'm grateful the ferns show up at all! I enjoy playing the pseudo scientist and get a thrill when the ferns come into view. Can anyone enlighten me about this system and comment on my having one fern day? Thank you! Sending out positive fertile thoughts and feelings in this season of miracles, BayShay
I bought one of those things and never got any fern shaped anything, and I know I ovulate, based on other tests. So, I wouldn't be worried about only one day of fern shapes, because it probably isn't working on the other days. Sorry to be so negative, but I think I spend something like $80 on the one I bought and found it to be utterly useless.
I bought the donna (a saliva test)on my ob/gyn's suggestion and have found it fascinating. The way I understand it about the ferning is its structural correlation to cm. When I've done it I've noticed small areas of ferning- not ferning all over- maybe thats something to check out?
What did you mean here: "The way I understand it about the ferning is its structural correlation to cm." Please explain. What do the ferns indicate exactly? What causes them? I also find this fascinating. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I feel like a pseudo scientist as I'm peering through the mini microscope.
I began using "The Donna" this past cycle. I've had several false positives when using the ovulation kits, so I switched to this, which is supposed to be more accurate.
The way it works, is as you approach ovulation, estrogen rises, creating more salts in saliva. Around 3 days before ovulation, you'll see hairlike structures, which means you are approaching the best time to conceive. When you do ovulate, that's when the ferning pattern appears. It made it real easy to nail the best time to conceive, especially since my last cycle was really off.
As far as you seeing one day of ferns, did you check several days before leading up to that? If not, that was the day you most likely ovulated. Also maybe the other times, you didn't get an accurate reading. I know I've had to try it several times, if there were too many bubbles that I didn't pop from my sample, or if the glass wasn't cleaned thoroughly. Also you shouldn't eat for 2 hours before you test, or even drink water less than a half hour before. All that stuff can effect the results.
I love it because it looks like a lipstick and I carry it with me wherever I go. I test several times a day to make sure I see the progression that's going on in my body. It does make you feel like you have some control, since we can't give ourselves sonograms daily!
Much luck to you - Hope you nail it next time.
Thank you all for your informative and encouraging posts. Here we are in the coldest season with the shortest time of daylight. Even in the seemingly coldest and darkest of times, a flame of hope can warm the chill and dispell the darkness. No matter how hopeless the situation appears, we must never give up, in spite of the "odds". G-d is not ruled by odds, so neither are we. I was delighted to see my ferns. You're right Nancy, it does look a bit like a lipstick holder. A feminine microscope. How appropriate. What does the saliva look like when one is pregant? I hope we find out soon! :) BayShay
I meant to write: "What does one's saliva look like when one is PREGNANT?" May we find out very extremely now!
I bought one of these, too, and I loved the little fern-like structures. But then I found i was getting them a couple times a month, and I knew I wasn't ovulating then. So I'm not so sure it's accurate. I would keep track of other fertility signs (temperature, cm, ovu. stick) as well.
Good luck to all of us! Jill
This is my first time posting on this websyte although I have been reading all of the posts for several months and feel like I know all of the ladies that have been posting their experiences. I'm 43 and have been actively tc for three years. I have a 10 year old beautiful daughter from my first marriage. I have remarried and my dh doesn't have any children and I always wanted to have another. I have tried theclinics doing IUI, clomid cycle, injectibles w/Pergonal and IVF. Unfortunately, Nothing worked because I don't respond well to the Meds. I then discovered Julia's book and it was a blessing for me. I have had two miscarriages in the last two years (early ones) the last one a few weeks ago at 7 weeks. My RE says that I should just keep trying that it will happen.
I was using the clear plan for 2 years and now I've been using Fertile-Focus(ovulation microscope) for the last six months and it has been great. I use it first thing in the morning before brushing and I take the saliva from underneath the tongue because the cells there give you a more accurate reading. It has worked for me. They have a syte that might be useful for you re:information. http://www.fertile-focus.com
Sorry I was so into replying that I forgot to finish entering my e-mail address.
Thank you Nicola for your kind words. :) And thank you Xiomara. I found the site you mentioned very informative. Jill, Perhaps you are ovulating more than once a month! Now that's exciting. All the best, BayShay
